Hi there. Wayne Bisset suggested I read your blog. I am a big Patricia Cornwell fan and have most of her books (they are not always available).
Anyway, Wayne suggested I contact you, so here I am. My two blogs are:
www.lifeenglishliterature.blogspot.com (Life, English and Literature) - a new blog dedicated to literature in the English language and www.yolandeduplessis.blogspot.com (Anything and Everything) - a blog where I just write.
Have a look. I think we may be able to learn from each other.
Cheers

Thanks for the comment, Chole.

Actually, I believe the best detective novels are those that not only present us with a mystery, but also use it to highlight important social issues. Ian Rankin does it; Ruth Rendell does it. Perhaps it makes their novels a bot longer, but I don't mind - they are well worth reading. Now I'm researching into where I can get more of their books. Perhaps I'll be able to order them through the newly-opened bookstore here, which specialises in foreign-language books.

I'll keep my readers posted. ;)

I haven't read this novel. I've actually heard of it for the first time from you here. Going by your review, it's more than just a detective thriller: there is an underlying current that tags us to be more thoughtful about more serious issues.

Recently looking at my web statistics I was smiling at what kind of keywords people are finding my blog for. Someone has typed into Google: "Why couldn't Laurette Akande become a doctor?" Interesting question - and, incidentally, one I've been asking myself, too. Why indeed?

Probably because she had done her degree in physics rather than medicine - that seems the most obvious reason. But honestly, I don't know.

Thanks for this information, Wayne - sounds exciting! I thought Tolkien was born in England.

Live and learn. You've made me dream about visiting that forest.

I know that Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, S.A., on 3 January 1892 and only spent a few years here. I do know that there is a forest in the Eastern Cape called the Hogsback and in the small village there is an area called Hobbiton. Those are facts.
My ex-wife was raised there until she was 5 years old. I got married to her in that forest 20 years later. I was told by the residents that Tolkien visited the area during the war and that he was inspired by the forest. I can believe this as it a truly magical place and the trees, yellowwood, and other hardwoods are just like Ents! If a hobbit appeared I would not be surprised. I still visit that forest to this day.

Yes, I wonder... my daughter enjoys cartoons that make me run away from the room in terrified - and books that make me cry and lose my night sleep.

But Alice stories are not among those, of course :)

Many fiction writers create maps of their worlds. Ursula Le Guin did it too.

Red shoes? Ewww! Of course they were silver!

Poirot? No, I don't think so. He was a nice gent with pretty manners - and incredibly smart. The white Rabbit is just fussy and hardly smart at all.

The only thing that had in common is probably the hat.

I no longer have that book that contained all the references and originals of the verses among them, so I can't help you there, sorry. It was a library book - now I only have an e-book, which has no references.
