Actually, I believe the best detective novels are those that not only present us with a mystery, but also use it to highlight important social issues. Ian Rankin does it; Ruth Rendell does it. Perhaps it makes their novels a bot longer, but I don't mind - they are well worth reading. Now I'm researching into where I can get more of their books. Perhaps I'll be able to order them through the newly-opened bookstore here, which specialises in foreign-language books. I'll keep my readers posted. ;) Thanks for the comment, Chole.
