Actually, I believe the best detective novels are those that not only present us with a mystery, but also use it to highlight important social issues. Ian Rankin does it; Ruth Rendell does it. Perhaps it makes their novels a bot longer, but I don&#039;t mind - they are well worth reading. Now I&#039;m researching into where I can get more of their books. Perhaps I&#039;ll be able to order them through the newly-opened bookstore here, which specialises in foreign-language books.
