Yes, I can imagine they did! The novel is full of foul language. But we are less sensitive about it in the 21st century. Perhaps I should have read it in my teens - but then I would have to read a translation, and in this case I think it's essential to read the original. Especailly as you're very clear as to why you don't like it. Whether or not I'd agree with your view, I don't know, as I've not yet read it myself.
